RESUMO

Drug-coated balloon (DCB) therapy is a promising endovascular treatment for obstructive arterial disease. The goal of DCB therapy is restoration of lumen patency in a stenotic vessel, whereby balloon deployment both mechanically compresses the offending lesion and locally delivers an antiproliferative drug, most commonly paclitaxel (PTX) or derivative compounds, to the arterial wall. Favorable long-term outcomes of DCB therapy thus require predictable and adequate PTX delivery, a process facilitated by coating excipients that promotes rapid drug transfer during the inflation period. While a variety of excipients have been considered in DCB design, there is a lack of understanding about the coating-specific biophysical determinants of essential device function, namely, acute drug transfer. We consider two hydrophilic excipients for PTX delivery, urea (UR) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and examine how compositional and preparational variables in the balloon surface spray-coating process impact resultant coating microstructure and in turn acute PTX transfer to the arterial wall. Specifically, we use scanning electron image analyses to quantify how coating microstructure is altered by excipient solid content and balloon-to-nozzle spray distance during the coating procedure and correlate obtained microstructural descriptors of coating aggregation to the efficiency of acute PTX transfer in a one-dimensional ex vivo model of DCB deployment. Experimental results suggest that despite the qualitatively different coating surface microstructures and apparent PTX transfer mechanisms exhibited with these excipients, the drug delivery efficiency is generally enhanced by coating aggregation on the balloon surface. We illustrate this microstructure-function relation with a finite element-based computational model of DCB deployment, which along with our experimental findings suggests a general design principle to increase drug delivery efficiency across a broad range of DCB designs.

The highly stable biomass structure formed by cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin results in incomplete conversion and carbonization under hydrothermal conditions. In this study, pretreated corn straw hydrochar (PCS-HC) was prepared using a low-temperature alkali/urea combination pretreatment method. The Mass loss rate of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin from pretreated biomass, as well as the effects of the pretreatment method on the physicochemical properties of PCS-HC and the adsorption performance of PCS-HC for alkaline dyes (rhodamine B and methylene blue), were investigated. The results showed that the low-temperature NaOH/urea pretreatment effectively disrupted the stable structure formed by cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. NaOH played a dominant role in solubilizing cellulose and the combination of low temperature and urea enhanced the ability of NaOH to remove cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Compared to the untreated hydrochar, PCS-HC exhibited a rougher surface, a more abundant pore structure, and a larger specific surface area. The unpretreated hydrochar exhibited an adsorption capacity of 64.8% for rhodamine B and 66.32% for methylene blue. However, the removal of rhodamine B and methylene blue by PCS-BC increased to 89.12% and 90.71%, respectively, under the optimal pretreatment conditions. The PCS-HC exhibited a favorable adsorption capacity within the pH range of 6-9. However, the presence of co-existing anions such as Cl-, SO42-, CO32-, and NO3- hindered the adsorption capacity of PCS-HC. Among these anions, CO32- exhibited the highest level of inhibition. Chemisorption, including complexation, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bonding, were the primary mechanism for dye adsorption by PCS-HC. This study provides an efficient method for utilizing agricultural waste and treating dye wastewater.

BACKGROUND: The autosomal recessive disorder N-acetylglutamate synthase (NAGS) deficiency is the rarest defect of the urea cycle, with an incidence of less than one in 2,000,000 live births. Hyperammonemic crises can be avoided in individuals with NAGS deficiency by the administration of carbamylglutamate (also known as carglumic acid), which activates carbamoyl phosphatase synthetase 1 (CPS1). The aim of this case series was to introduce additional cases of NAGS deficiency to the literature as well as to assess the role of nutrition management in conjunction with carbamylglutamate therapy across new and existing cases. METHODS: We conducted retrospective chart reviews of seven cases of NAGS deficiency in the US and Canada, focusing on presentation, diagnosis, medication management, nutrition management, and outcomes. RESULTS: Five new and two previously published cases were included. Presenting symptoms were consistent with previous reports. Diagnostic confirmation via molecular testing varied in protocol across cases, with consecutive single gene tests leading to long delays in diagnosis in some cases. All patients responded well to carbamylglutamate therapy, as indicated by normalization of plasma ammonia and citrulline, as well as urine orotic acid in patients with abnormal levels at baseline. Although protein restriction was not prescribed in any cases after carbamylglutamate initiation, two patients continued to self-restrict protein intake. One patient experienced two episodes of hyperammonemia that resulted in poor long-term outcomes. Both episodes occurred after a disruption in access to carbamylglutamate, once due to insurance prior authorization requirements and language barriers and once due to seizure activity limiting the family's ability to administer carbamylglutamate. CONCLUSIONS: Follow-up of patients with NAGS deficiency should include plans for illness and for disruption of carbamylglutamate access, including nutrition management strategies such as protein restriction. Carbamylglutamate can help patients with NAGS deficiency to liberalize their diets, but the maximum safe level of protein intake to prevent hyperammonemia is not yet known. Patients using this medication should still monitor their diet closely and be prepared for any disruptions in medication access, which might require immediate dietary adjustments or medical intervention to prevent hyperammonemia.

The present study aimed to use poor quality roughages, such as rice and faba bean straw, treated with or without urea, and their impacts on digestibility, rumen fermentation, some blood parameters, and growth performance of lambs. Twenty crossbred male lambs (1/4 Finland ×¾ Ossimi, 25±1.13kg live body weight) were chosen and divided into four groups. All lambs were fed rations of concentrated feed mixture at 2% of live weight with the following roughages ad libitum: URS (control group, untreated rice straw), TRS (urea-treated rice straw), FBS (faba bean straw), and TRS+FBS (mixture of TRS and FBS, 1:1). Nutrient digestibility and feeding values improved (P<0.05) with TRS+FBS lambs versus FBS, TRS and URS lambs. The highest numerical values of ruminal total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration in TRS lambs were recorded 23.9 ml.eq/dl followed by TRS+FBS, URS and FBS. Regarding to the ruminal parameters, there were no differences (P>0.05) among evaluated groups except for NH3-N, the highest concentration (P<0.05) was recorded in TRS lambs at 3 h post-feeding. Lambs of TRS, FBS and TRS+FBS showed faster growth (P<0.05) than those of the control (i.e., URS). Intakes of dry matter, total digestible nutrients, and digestible crude protein were numerically increased for TRS, FBS, and TRS+FBS. Feed conversion, as kg dry matter/kg gain, was improved for TRS, FBS, and TRS+FBS lambs versus URS. Daily gain of lambs increased (P<0.05) with lambs of TRS, FBS, and TRS+FBS but URS lambs showed a decrease (P<0.05) in daily gain. Feed conversion as kg dry matter intake/kg gain was improved (P<0.05) by feeding on TRS, FBS and TRS+FBS rations versus URS. The TRS+FBS lambs tended to have the highest economic efficiency versus URS, TRS and FBS lambs. BACKGROUND: Ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (OTCD) due to an X-linked OTC mutation, is responsible for moderate to severe hyperammonemia (HA) with substantial morbidity and mortality. About 80% of females with OTCD remain apparently "asymptomatic" with limited studies of their clinical characteristics and long-term health vulnerabilities. Multimodal neuroimaging studies and executive function testing have shown that asymptomatic females exhibit limitations when stressed to perform at higher cognitive load and had reduced activation of the prefrontal cortex. This retrospective study aims to improve understanding of factors that might predict development of defined complications and serious illness in apparent asymptomatic females. A proband and her daughter are presented to highlight the utility of multimodal neuroimaging studies and to underscore that asymptomatic females with OTCD are not always asymptomatic. METHODS: We review data from 302 heterozygote females with OTCD enrolled in the Urea Cycle Disorders Consortium (UCDC) longitudinal natural history database. We apply multiple neuroimaging modalities in the workup of a proband and her daughter. RESULTS: Among the females in the database, 143 were noted as symptomatic at baseline (Sym). We focused on females who were asymptomatic (Asx, n = 111) and those who were asymptomatic initially upon enrollment in study but who later became symptomatic sometime during follow-up (Asx/Sym, n = 22). The majority of Asx (86%) and Asx/Sym (75%) subjects did not restrict protein at baseline, and ~38% of Asx and 33% of Asx/Sym subjects suffered from mild to severe neuropsychiatric conditions such as mood disorder and sleep problems. The risk of mild to severe HA sometime later in life for the Asx and Asx/Sym subjects as a combined group was ~4% (5/133), with ammonia ranging from 77 to 470 µM and at least half (2/4) of subjects requiring hospital admission and nitrogen scavenger therapy. For this combined group, the median age of first HA crisis was 50 years, whereas the median age of first symptom which included neuropsychiatric and/or behavioral symptoms was 17 years. The multimodal neuroimaging studies in female heterozygotes with OTCD also underscore that asymptomatic female heterozygotes with OTCD (e.g., proband) are not always asymptomatic. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of Asx and Asx/Sym females with OTCD in this study suggests that future evidence-based management guidelines and/or a clinical risk score calculator for this cohort could be useful management tools to reduce morbidity and improve long-term quality of life.

The objective of this study was to compare the indirect methods of obtaining digestibility with the direct method of total fecal collection to estimate the apparent digestibility of nutrients in sheep and goats supplemented with non-protein nitrogen. Five goats and five sheep with no defined racial pattern were used, distributed in two 5 × 5 Latin squares, with split plots, considering the diets as plots and the apparent digestibility determination methodologies as subplots. The diets were composed of buffelgrass hay and the addition, via ruminal infusion, of increasing amounts of nitrogen supplementation in order to gradually raise the CP level of the basal diet in intervals of 2% points, that is, + 2, +4, + 6 and + 8%. Samples of the feeds offered, and the leftovers were collected daily during the five days of collection to determine the nutrient intake, as well as the total collection of feces to determine the apparent digestibility of the nutrients. The amount of fecal dry matter excreted was estimated by the concentration of Indigestible Acid Detergent Fiber (ADFi), Indigestible Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDFi), Indigestible Dry Matter at 244 h (DMi 244 h) and Indigestible Dry Matter at 264 h (DMi 264 h). Among the evaluated markers, DMi 264 h had the lowest accuracy in estimating fecal excretion and nutrient digestibility. For the goat species, the markers ADFi and DMi 244 h proved to be able to adequately predict fecal excretion and digestibility indices, while NDFi stood out for both species. Among the evaluated markers, NDFi is the one that most accurately estimates the nutrient digestibility of the diet for goats and sheep.

INTRODUCTION: Hand foot skin reaction (HFSR) is a common dose-limiting adverse effect of multi kinase inhibitors (MKI) whose mechanism is not fully understood, and the prophylaxis is inadequate. OBJECTIVE: In this pilot study, a double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of topical urea in secondary prevention of sunitinib-induced HFSR in renal cell cancer patients. METHODS: Out of 55 screened patients, 14 were randomized to receive topical urea or placebo for four weeks. The association of HFSR with drug levels of sunitinib and its metabolite (n-desethyl sunitinib), genetic polymorphism of VEGFR2 gene, quality of life (QOL) and biochemical markers was also assessed. RESULTS: The results showed that urea-based cream was not superior to placebo (P = .075). There was no change in the QOL in both the groups. Single nucleotide polymorphism was checked for two nucleotides rs1870377 and rs2305948 located in VEGFR2 gene on chromosome 4. SNP (variant T > A) at rs1870377 was associated with appearance of new HFSR as compared to the wild type, although the association was not statistically significant (OR 0.714). There was no statistically significant difference between mean plasma levels of sunitinib and N-desethyl sunitinib in urea arm as compared to placebo arm as compared to placebo. The best fit population pharmacokinetic model for sunitinib was one compartment model with first order absorption and linear elimination. The median (IQR) of population parameters calculated from the population pharmacokinetics model for Ka, V and Cl was 0.22 (0.21-0.24) h-1, 4.4 (4.09-4.47) L, 0.049 (0.042-0.12) L/hr, respectively. CONCLUSION: The study suggested that the urea-based cream was not superior to placebo in decreasing the appearance of new HFSR in renal cancer patients receiving 4:2 regimen of sunitinib.

Nanocellulose is a kind of renewable natural polymer material with high specific surface area, high crystallinity, and strong mechanical properties. RC nanofibers (RCNFs) have attracted an increasing attention in various applications due to their high aspect ratio and good flexibility. Herein, a novel and facile strategy for RCNFs preparation with high-speed shear induced in urea solution through "bottom-up" approach was proposed in this work. Results indicated that the average diameter and yield of RCNF was approach to 136.67 nm and 53.3 %, respectively. Meanwhile, due to the regular orientation RC chains and arrangement micro-morphology, RCNFs exhibited high crystallinity, strong mechanical properties, stable thermal degradation performance, and excellent UV resistance. In this study, a novel regeneration process with high-speed shear induced was developed to produce RCNFs with excellent properties. This study paved a strategy for future low-energy production of nanofibers and high value-added conversion applications of agricultural waste.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents one of the most challenging global Public Health issues, with an alarmingly increasing rate of attributable mortality. This scenario highlights the urgent need for innovative medicinal strategies showing activity on resistant isolates (especially, carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and vancomycin-resistant enterococci) yielding new approaches for the treatment of bacterial infections. We previously reported AlkylGuanidino Ureas (AGUs) with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and a putative membrane-based mechanism of action. Herein, new tetra- and mono-guanidino derivatives were designed and synthesized to expand the structure-activity relationships (SARs) and, thereby, tested on the same panel of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The membrane-active mechanism of selected compounds was then investigated through molecular dynamics (MD) on simulated bacterial membranes. In the end, the newly synthesized series, along with the whole library of compounds (more than 70) developed in the last decade, was tested in combination with subinhibitory concentrations of the last resort antibiotic colistin to assess putative synergistic or additive effects. Moreover, all the AGUs were subjected to cheminformatic and machine learning analyses to gain a deeper knowledge of the key features required for bioactivity.

A 63-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus, alcohol consumption in moderation, and three episodes of hepatic encephalopathy presented with symmetrical lower limb distal weakness, sensory ataxia, thickened palpable nerves, mood disturbances for seven years, and a family history of schizophreniform disorders. Nerve conduction studies showed demyelinating sensorimotor polyradiculoneuropathy. CSF analysis showed mild albumino-cytological dissociation. MRI brain and lumbosacral plexus showed thickened fifth cranial nerves and lumbosacral roots. He was treated with steroids for a provisional diagnosis of chronic inflammatory polyneuropathy and became encephalopathic. EEG showed triphasic waves. Serum ammonia was 201 micrograms/dL. Further evaluation suggested ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency. The patient underwent hemodialysis with a low protein diet, rifaximin, and sodium benzoate, with subsequent recovery.

Currently, research on thermal interface materials (TIMs) is primarily focused on enhancing thermal conductivity. However, strong adhesion and multifunctionality are also important characteristics for TIMs when pursing more stable interface heat conduction. Herein, a novel poly(urethane-urea-imide) (PUUI) elastomer containing abundant dynamic hydrogen bonds network and reversible disulfide linkages is successfully synthesized for application as a TIM matrix. The PUUI can self-adapt to the metal substrate surface at moderate temperatures (80 °C) and demonstrates a high adhesion strength of up to 7.39 MPa on aluminum substrates attributed its noncovalent interactions and strong intrinsic cohesion. Additionally, the PUUI displays efficient self-healing capability, which can restore 94% of its original mechanical properties after self-healing for 6 h at room temperature. Furthermore, PUUI composited with aluminum nitride and liquid metal hybrid fillers demonstrates a high thermal conductivity of 3.87 W m-1 K-1 while maintaining remarkable self-healing capability and adhesion. When used as an adhesive-type TIM, it achieves a low thermal contact resistance of 22.1 mm2 K W-1 at zero pressure, only 16.7% of that of commercial thermal pads. This study is expected to break the current research paradigm of TIMs and offers new insights for the development of advanced, reliable, and sustainable TIMs.

Benzoic acid is used as a preservative in processed food, and occasionally in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, while benzoic acid occurs naturally in, e.g., cranberry and lingonberry. Therefore, the determination of benzoate is of interest for product quality assurance, food safety, and personal health. In this work, a solid-contact benzoate-selective electrode (benzoate-ISE) was developed by utilising poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) as solid contact and a solvent polymeric membrane containing a 1,3-bis(carbazolyl)urea derivative as ionophore. The benzoate-ISE was characterised in parallel with an ionophore-free control-ISE by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiometry. The presence of the ionophore in the membrane improved the selectivity to benzoate. Benzoate-ISEs and control-ISEs were used further to determine the benzoate concentration in cranberry and lingonberry by standard addition. The results obtained with both types of ISEs were compared with those obtained by ion chromatography. The results obtained with benzoate-ISEs were consistent with those obtained with ion chromatography. On the contrary, the control-ISE (without ionophore) gave significantly higher benzoate concentrations, especially in the case of cranberry where the benzoate concentration was low (ca 0.2 g kg-1) compared to lingonberry (ca 1 g kg-1). Hence, the benzoate-selectivity of the ionophore was crucial to obtain a benzoate-ISE that was practically applicable for determination of benzoate concentrations in cranberry and lingonberry.

The development of a methodology for synthesizing value-added urea (CO(NH2)2) via a renewable electricity-driven C-N coupling reaction under mild conditions is highly anticipated. However, the complex catalytic active sites that act on the carbon and nitrogen species make the reaction mechanism unclear, resulting in a low efficiency of C-N coupling from the co-reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrate (NO3-). Herein,we propose a novel tandem catalyst of Mo-PCN-222(Co), in which the Mo sites serve to facilitate nitrate reduction to the *NH2 intermediate, while the Co sites enhance CO2 reduction to carbonic oxide (CO), thus synergistically promoting C-N coupling. The synthesized Mo-PCN-222(Co) catalyst exhibited a noteworthy urea yield rate of 844.11mg h-1 g-1, alongside a corresponding Faradaic efficiency of 33.90% at -0.4 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). By combining in situ spectroscopic techniques with density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that efficient C-N coupling is attributed to a tandem system in which the *NH2 and *CO intermediates produced by the Mo and Co active sites of Mo-PCN-222(Co) stabilize the formation of the *CONH2 intermediate. This study provides an effective avenue for the design and synthesis of tandem catalysts for electrocatalytic urea synthesis.

RESUMO

In contrast to the thermodynamically unfavorable anodic oxygen evolution reaction, the electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction (UOR) presents a more favorable thermodynamic potential. However, the practical application of UOR has been hindered by sluggish kinetics. In this study, hierarchical porous nanosheet arrays featuring abundant Ni-WO3 heterointerfaces on nickel foam (Ni-WO3/NF) is introduced as a monolith electrode, demonstrating exceptional activity and stability toward UOR. The Ni-WO3/NF catalyst exhibits unprecedentedly rapid UOR kinetics (200 mA cm-2 at 1.384 V vs. RHE) and a high turnover frequency (0.456 s-1), surpassing most previously reported Ni-based catalysts, with negligible activity decay observed during a durability test lasting 150 h. Ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations elucidate that the WO3 interface significantly modulates the local charge distribution of Ni species, facilitating the generation of Ni3+ with optimal affinity for interacting with urea molecules and CO2 intermediates at heterointerfaces during UOR. This mechanism accelerates the interfacial electrocatalytic kinetics. Additionally, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy provides deep insights into the substantial contribution of interfacial Ni-WO3 sites to UOR electrocatalysis, unraveling the underlying molecular-level mechanisms. Finally, the study explores the application of a direct urea fuel cell to inspire future practical implementations.

Amphibian diversity is most prominent in the warm and humid tropical and subtropical regions across the globe. Nonetheless, amphibians also inhabit high-altitude tropical mountains and regions at medium and high latitudes, exposing them to subzero temperatures and requiring behavioural or physiological adaptations to endure freezing events. While freeze tolerance has been predominantly reported in high-latitude zones where species endure prolonged freezing (several weeks or months), less is known about mid-latitudes amphibians exposed to occasional subzero temperatures. In this study, we employed a controlled ecological protocol, subjecting three frog species from the Iberian Peninsula (Rana parvipalmata, Epidalea calamita, and Pelobates cultripes) to a 2-h exposure to temperatures of -2 °C to investigate the accumulation of urea and glucose as physiological mechanisms associated with survival at freezing temperatures. Our results revealed a moderate response in the production of cryoprotectant metabolites under experimental freezing conditions, particularly urea, with notable findings in R. parvipalmata and E. calamita and no response in P. cultripes. However, no significant alterations in glucose concentrations were observed in any of the studied frog species. This relatively weak freezing tolerance response differs from the strong response exhibited by amphibians inhabiting high latitudes and enduring prolonged freezing conditions, suggesting potential reliance on behavioural adaptations to cope with occasional freezing episodes.

The electrocatalytic production of "green hydrogen", such as through the electrolysis of water or urea has been vigorously advocated to alleviate the energy crisis. However, their electrode reactions including oxygen evolution reaction (OER), urea oxidation reaction (UOR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) all suffer from sluggish kinetics, which urgently need catalysts to accelerate the processes. Herein, we design and prepare an OER/UOR/HER trifunctional catalyst by transforming the homemade CoO nanorod into a two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin heterojunction nickel-iron-cobalt hybrid phosphides nanosheet (NiFeP/CoP) via a hydrothermal-phosphorization method. Consequently, a strong electronic interaction was found among the Ni2P/FeP4/CoP heterogeneous interfaces, which regulates the electronic structure. Besides the high mass transfer property of 2D nanosheet, Ni2P/FeP4/CoP displays improved OER/UOR/HER performance. At 10 mA cm-2, the OER overpotential reaches 274 mV in 1.0 M KOH, and the potential of UOR is only 1.389 V in 1.0 M KOH and 0.33 M urea. More strikingly, the two-electrode systems for electrolysis water and urea-assisted electrolysis water assembled by NiFeP/CoP could maintain long-term stability for 35 h and 12 h, respectively. This work may help to pave the way for upcoming research horizons of multifunctional electrocatalysts.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence has shown that the blood urea nitrogen to serum albumin ratio (BAR) is associated with the severity and prognosis of heart failure. However, its role in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) remains unclear. This study investigated the associations between BAR and functional status, echocardiographic findings, hemodynamics, and long-term outcomes among patients with IPAH. METHODS: This study included consecutive patients who underwent right heart catheterization (RHC) and were diagnosed with IPAH between January 2013 and January 2018 at Fuwai Hospital. The primary outcome was the worsening of clinical symptoms. Spearman correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the association between the BAR and established markers of IPAH severity. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to determine BAR's optimal cut-off and predictive performance. Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazard models assessed the relationship between BAR and clinical worsening. RESULTS: A total of 340 patients with IPAH were included in this study. BAR correlated with well-validated variables that reflected the severity of IPAH, such as World Health Organization functional class, 6-min walk distance, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level, mixed venous oxygen saturation, and cardiac index. Kaplan-Meier curves indicated that patients with BAR>3.80 had a significantly higher clinical worsening rate (log-rank test, P < 0.001) than those with BAR≤3.80. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that BAR could independently predict clinical worsening [hazard ratio(HR):1.177, 95% confidence interval (CI):1.014-1.367, P=0.005]. In addition, BAR provided additional predictive value for the European Society of Cardiology (ESC)/European Respiratory Society (ERS) risk assessment score. CONCLUSIONS: BAR reflects disease severity and is independently associated with the prognosis of patients with IPAH.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is recognized as a sustainable and effective strategy for desalination to mitigate the freshwater scarcity issue. Nevertheless, the challenges of oil contamination, salt accumulation, and poor long-term stability of the solar desalination process limit its applications. Herein, a 3D biomass-based multifunctional solar aerogel evaporator is developed for water production with fabricated chitosan/lignin (CSL) aerogel as the skeleton, encapsulated with carbonized lignin (CL) particles and Ti3C2TiX (MXene) nanosheets as light-absorbing materials. Benefitting from its super-hydrophilic wettability, interconnected macropore structure, and high broadband light absorption (ca. 95.50%), the prepared CSL-C@MXene-20 mg evaporator exhibited a high and stable water evaporation flux of 2.351 kg m-2 h-1 with an energy conversion efficiency of 88.22% under 1 Sun (1 kW m-2) illumination. The CSL-C@MXene-20 mg evaporator performed excellent salt tolerance and long-term solar vapor generation in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Also, its super-hydrophilicity and oleophobicity resulted in superior salt resistance and anti-fouling performance in high salinity brine (20 wt.% NaCl) and oily wastewater. This work offers new insight into the manufacture of porous and eco-friendly biomass-based photothermal aerogels for advanced solar-powered seawater desalination and wastewater purification.

Concentrations of dissolved nitrogen in seawater can affect the resilience of the cnidarian-dinoflagellate symbiosis to climate change-induced bleaching. However, it is not yet known how the assimilation and translocation of the various nitrogen forms change during heat stress, nor how the symbiosis responds to nutrient depletion, which may occur due to increasing water stratification. Here, the tropical scleractinian coral Stylophora pistillata, in symbiosis with dinoflagellates of the genus Symbiodinium, was grown at different temperatures (26°C, 30°C and 34°C), before being placed in nutrient-replete or -depleted seawater for 24 h. The corals were then incubated with 13C-labelled sodium bicarbonate and different 15N-labelled nitrogen forms (ammonium, urea and dissolved free amino acids) to determine their assimilation rates. We found that nutrient depletion inhibited the assimilation of all nitrogen sources studied and that heat stress reduced the assimilation of ammonium and dissolved free amino acids. However, the host assimilated over 3-fold more urea at 30°C relative to 26°C. Overall, both moderate heat stress (30°C) and nutrient depletion individually decreased the total nitrogen assimilated by the symbiont by 66%, and combined, they decreased assimilation by 79%. This led to the symbiotic algae becoming nitrogen starved, with the C:N ratio increasing by over 3-fold at 34°C, potentially exacerbating the impacts of coral bleaching.
